Most of the golds I have are from chests. Yes chests will grant you great drops. However, it is at the expense of 1k200 to 1k500. And it can drop some purple from these chests.
Just vainquish an area without taking any lockpick, you'll be disappointed.
The ratio risk/reward is so low that only solo farming is interesting.
I just vanquished Wajjun Bazaar today with two friends--the rest Heroes--and each of us got at least two gold drops apiece, not counting chests.

Honestly, it's very likely all random, or as random as a program can get.

Farming is and has always been about persistience. Don't give up just keep killing stuff and the drops will come.
I think you are right, I get much more gold drops then i ever had in the past, this is even with henchies. I believed for a time that I was unlucky with lockpicks. I started grouping data in the effectiveness of 10 lockpicks, soon I I came to the conclusion that variance is big, but I'm neither lucky nor unlucky.

Maybe its the quality of the gold that imprints it in the mind, if it is not good (as most golds are bad) it is a "forgotten" drop.

Default Hard Mode Blows

After reading all the posts on this thread yesterday I decided to check for myself. I solo'd FoW with the following results: First run cleared spawn area and all but one of the Ranger/Abyssal groups, got popped by the mes patrol. Total farm time about 10 1/2 minutes, loot dropped: 2 merch golds, blue dye, 1 shard. Not bad. Second run (got used to increased attack speed) cleared all Shadow groups in spawn area, except Mes/Monk patrol and Mes/Monk stationary group. Total farm time about 25 minutes, loot dropped: 1 merch gold, a ton of whites, a ton of dark remains, a yellow dye. I can do the same run in normal mode quicker, with consistently better drops, avg 3-5 shard drops, and at least 1-2 golds, ruby or saphire every once and a while too.

Final Analysis: Hard Mode does not pay off as promised, the only true benefit here is that you get double xp, and as we all know, after lvl 20 that doesn't mean jack squat. Now if ANET could come up with some XP based rewards or skills, hmmm.........

Vanquisher and Guardian of Elona got me:

1 green (Rit off-hand wheeee - actually got green Rit offhands 2 days in a row, but the second was in Cantha)
0 elite tomes

How many HM bosses is that?

Plenty of other stuff though, so I'm not exactly complaining. Just somewhat mystified. Got a perfect zealous recurve the other day, quite a few regular tomes, etc. And plenty of cash tbh.

well I notice a distinct drop in loot in HM if I solo farm the same area more than once or twice. First time 3 golds or so, second grapes then from then on only whites with the very occasional gold if I'm lucky. If I then go away and play for a few hours or so on another char things get better for one run again and then significanlty drop. It is identical to the old farming code, so I'm sorry but I'm not convinced it's been removed.

I don't think that there has been any code changes for this,

I try to vanquish one area a day here and there and doing a few aareas recently got no Gold items, no lockpicks scrolls, tomes, purples or blues just white and gold. This is with heroes and hench In Ascalon

Today i tried to vanquish ferndale, but failed n the last boss, but I got 6 gold drops, 4 purple, 2 blue and a pile of whites, and gold, with heroes and hench team.

this is the second best run i've had, apart from one where i got 4 lockpicks and didnt break opening 2 chests, with 4 gold drops and lots of other things.

Because this is random i think that sometimes we get really lucky ad otertimes really unlucky

You really can't measure this on elite tomes from bosses... they are PURE luck. You can kill the same boss 30 times and not see a single elite tome.

But there is a distinct lack of variation with drops, it's been obvious since the beginning of Guild Wars. 1 guildy seems to get all the golds no matter what. Friend gets so many elite tomes its not funny.

The worst for this are Armours. Anyone who finds armorus regularly will probably have noticed. The Runes seem to come in groups. I distinctly remember having several Sup Prots and some random ones. Then it was onto a load of Sup Swordsmanships. Then we moved onto Healing Prayers. Then off back to somet like Wilderness Survival. Or even more noticable, 2 armours with identical runes/insignia.

This sorta thing is happening WAY too often to be randomness at work.

While i have little problems with normal drops (as far as I checked), I have a problems with chests. Everytime I switch to an area (it may even be a new one), little chests spawn. When return regularly it returns to normal. but usually when i start for example an LB farm run I typically get no chest whil 1-3 are quite normal. I had this experience with others in FoW and UW too.

Had a great one last night, doing my usual hm solo run, getting the usual bag full of whites and then drop a req9 max fiery blade axe, i thought great at least something i can sell, only when i ID'd it after my run it was just a req9 max fiery blade axe uninscriptable no damage mod nothing! and that was my only gold out of 95 foes and 2 chests. I thought every purp or gold on elona was inscriptable, go figure...

You're right, basing it off two runs is silly, that's why I played all last night in h/m, and guess what, still the same if not even more disappointing results. ZOMG, amazing! The point is simply, if you are about titling and getting as yet useless additional XP, then h/m is perfect for you, if you are a loot farmer your time is more wisely invested just sticking with n/m, imo.

Final analysis: No change from above.
